jitwam. – ज़ितम सिहँ
At Cosmic Compositions, we’ve long felt there was a similarity between the avant-garde/free jazz scene of the 50s/60s and the modern beat generation. Both movements aimed to deconstruct, expand and rewire the conventions of their genres of origin, and were never afraid to experiment or work outside the commercial framework of the time. With our Avant Garde Series, we connected the dots between the two, paying homage to Empire State Musicians like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Sun-Ra along the way.
In more recent years, we’ve sensed kindred spirit between jazz-infected beat music, and the new generation of lo-fi funk, psychedelia, noise, and folk musicians operating around the globe. While we’ve been feeling our way towards this liminal zone with projects from the likes of Mr. Armish, Affsid Kidjhagiffy, Aporia, and our Way Out compilation, jitwam’s new album ज़ितम सिहँ might be the most beautiful expression of it we’ve released yet.
Born in Assam, Gauhati, in Northeast India, but currently based in New York’s storied borough of Brooklyn, jitwam spent his formative years in New Zealand and Australia, before living in monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and washed out apartments in London. Of everywhere and nowhere, his music draws influence from a litany of iconoclasts including, but not limited to RD Burman, Moondog, The Velvet Underground, Yayoi Kusama, Jay Electronica, Jay Dilla, Moodymann, Leon Thomas, Madlib and Asha Bhosle.

Various Artists – Steppin’ Ahead!!
This is the selection from Steppin’ Ahead releases. include 3 unreleased tracks.
Label “Steppin’ Ahead” was born in Japan during the heyday of Dubstep.
It was a time when the mainstream was full of imitations of the original UK sound in Japan. Even though we were struggling through a clash with the mainstream, we continued to sell works that thoroughly drew out the uniqueness of each musician, and received better reviews in Europe and US than Japan.
The colorfulness and high quality of that sound is still significant even when heard next to today’s mainstream music like Bass Music, Gorge, Beats, and also Psychedelic and darkside Jazz.
and it makes you realize the importance of “originality” in music.

Julia Bloop – Roland Throop
Also Available On: Cassette (Ltd. 100)
‘Roland Throop’ is the second cassette from Brooklyn-based Julia Bloop, following a debut on Rotifer Cassettes — the last tape they launched before a year-long hiatus. Both this and the debut, wonderfully named ‘Bllop,’ rely on meticulously arranged loops and effects. The material here was gathered haphazardly though, while living out a dreary sublet overlooking a barren concrete courtyard, “I drank wine, watched movies, listened to the radio, and was never quite sure what sounds I’d find on my 4-track when I woke up the next morning.” Though both albums are more than adequate just as reveries, despite its more dreamlike passages ‘Roland Throop’ has a distinct emotional charge throughout. That atmosphere comes across perfectly in the opener “I Gotta Get Outta This Place,” a strain of melancholia beautifully drawn out and recast elsewhere into shades of loneliness, as with “Too Many Ghosts,” or ambling epiphanies like “That Dracula” and “Tenaya.”
