Vignettes to me are little ideas or memories that might evoke a strong sense of emotion. The goal of this project is to try and match the description of a vignette that I’ve created. Many of these tracks I can trace back to a memory that had some sort of impact on me and I can recall many details of the exact time and place. This is a very personal album to me which is why I think it’s perfect for someone like me to release due to my state of being.
This album will not have beats, hip hop, raps, anything of the sort. It was done out of wanting to explore other styles of music and cultures that have been inspiring me for a part of my upbringing. Not to discredit anything I’ve done thus far, I was just having an immense connection to the sounds that I desperately tried to emulate with the equipment and technique I have acquired up until this point. Much of the styling and character of this record is strictly percussive, as drums have always been integral to my process. I took inspiration from the clave patterns I would hear growing up, to the double conga hits at the end of a two or four bar phrase, to the intense rumbling of gongs and cabasas I would occasionally hear. These are the elements that made me appreciate what rhythm really is, and why rhythm is so important.
