“Vignettes is a true example of ‘art imitating life.’ All the commentary/music is a collection of my personal experiences and those reflections applied to music to document an honest depiction of my current perspective on life and the world we share.” – Damu The Fudgemunk

According to Merriam-Webster, “Vignettes” means, a short descriptive literary sketch/brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie). The album is aptly titled where 15 musical scenes, each with their own unique settings, are stitched harmoniously together to provide a universal message to the audience in which they use the gift of their own interpretation. At just over 2 hours long, the listener is given an unfiltered front row performance into the heart, mind and soul of the the artist. This latest effort from Damu the Fudgemunk is of typical and unorthodox proportions. Musically, it’s what you should expect from the man who brought you the How it Should Sound franchise, Supply for Demand and The Spur Momento Trailer. Intellectually, it’s his most vulnerable piece of work to date. Hoping to challenge and inspire the listener through a musical narrative, it’s content is open ended. Any resulting opinion that provokes thinking is encouraged given the message in this “Vignettes” album. Even the art direction is intentionally abstract and undefined to welcome the attention of all people. The album is completely instrumental except for “Openings,” the lone vocal track which features Raw Poetic. With a “Quality over Quantity” slogan, Redefinition Records adds “Vignettes” to it’s legacy and marks their first 3LP vinyl release which is exclusive to, while double cd’s (in Mini Lp style packaging with printed inner sleeves) and double cassettes (in a unique side by side case instead of the standard double cassette box) are available everywhere. Though the word vignettes may refer to something brief, Damu the Fudgemunk’s new album “Vignettes” has a long future ahead for years to come.

Damu The Fudgemunk – Full Time

As promised by Redefinition Records, Damu the Fudgemunk’s debut solo album “Spare Time” and it’s companion EP “Overtime” are finally available in their entirety for the first time on vinyl.

These two previously digital-only titles are now packaged together as “Full Time” for the complete listening experience. Both were digitally released in 2008 following up on the demand of Damu’s growing fanbase after producing Y Society 2007 classic, “Travel at your Pace.” This was pre-bandcamp, pre-spotify and way before our best selling series, How It Should Sound, was ever conceived. Spare Time and Overtime etched Damu the Fudgemunk as one of the most promising beat makers of the 2000’s. This was also the beginning of his long standing partnership with Jnota, as they started to grow their fledgling label, Redefinition Records, into what is now a trustworthy brand of quality hip hop music. Damu’s most successful releases H.I.S.S. & Supply For Demand have captured thousands of listeners to date, but the music heard on this double LP is what created the undeniable stock for Damu the Fudgemunk in today’s vinyl marketplace.

In 2013, an updated yet consolidated version known as “Spare Overtime Re-Inspired [RDF045, Available on Vinyl, CD, Tape & Digital] was released as a single 12” LP, but in order to make that possible, Damu and Redef had to make some executive edits to final product due to time constraints, so a handful of tracks were left off, including some fan favorites. “Full Time” preserves what was cut, and then some. Songs like Coffee Table and Randi among others are finally pressed on wax.

All the tracks were mastered from their original recordings, most of which are a decade old. Time is of the essence and it’s significance is obvious in Damu’s career. This time, there’s no question that the glass is not half, but completely full, proving that company motto, “quality over quantity” is the best use of his work schedule.

Thanks for buying this record!

Damu The Fudgemunk – HISS ABYSS (How It Should Sound)

With all the material considered for How It Should Sound (HISS) Volumes 3-5, it became difficult to determine which tracks would make the final album. While working on the album (3, 4 & 5), I lost track of the complete running time and how many beats were recorded. Selecting and sequencing songs for the definitive album was a task in itself for Redef, but once we decided to make 3 volumes instead of 2 as originally intended, things started lining up. This record features bonus material including outtakes and interludes that otherwise would have gone unheard. Being the 5th anniversary of the HISS franchise (2010-2015), we wanted to acknowledge the milestone by making more music available to our unsuspecting fans. HISS Abyss. Whether you consider yourself a hardcore vinyl enthusiast or general fan of music, the intent of this record is to extend the listening experience as presented in the How It Should Sound Series. Thank you all for the support.

Damu The Fudgemunk – How It Should Sound – Volumes 3, 4 & 5

H.I.S.S. 3-5 Artist Statement from Damu the Fudgemunk

The positive response to HISS 1&2 (2010) was unexpected for Redef as a label and for Damu The Fudgemunk as an artist. Not long after it’s release, the project took on a life of it’s own and has continued to grow and evolve over the years. In 2014, just 1 year prior to it’s 5th anniversary, I started to think about how I wanted to do something special to acknowledge what is arguably my most popular record thus far. Aside from giving Volume 1 & 2 deluxe anniversary packaging treatment, I figured that more music in the form of a sequel would be dope way to celebrate. In early 2014 I went through boxes of floppies and started to compile what would go on to form HISS Volumes 3-5. The most important thing for me during the selection process was finding beats that were made during the same time period as the bulk of HISS Volumes 1& 2 (Depsite being released in 2010, much of the music was composed and stashed away, many years prior to the official release). In fact, many of the tracks heard on 3, 4 & 5 were candidates for 1&2 during the original 2010 recording sessions. Considering the reputation of the first 2 volumes and my artistic growth since, I found it very important to continue volume 3 where 2 left off, and to preserve the listening experience that many hold dear (ie The music of HISS sounds nothing Like Spur Momento). Those that know me are aware of my sentimental connection to my music before it leaves the studio and the level of comfort I reach with each piece before it gets released. The music of HISS were songs that I composed mainly for my own leisure, years prior to becoming a professional artist. Now in the year 2015, I have a 10 plus year relationship with many of these productions. When I listen to the music on projects like HISS and even Spare/Overtime, they serve as a great reminder of where I started and the excitement of learning, and then perfecting my craft as an amateur beat maker. The tracks are a combination of my many obvious influences, my personal passion to contribute to the genre, and to challenge the craft and the record collection I was building. Some of the techniques and styles associated with my production were in the discovery phase. I was developing my sound and also discovering new artists and records along the way, with each new element giving me additional inspiration, layer by layer. Back then, I would come home from a 9-5 office job, listen to records and make beats on evenings and weekends. Another thing worth noting with most of the stuff on 3-5 is that I consider those tracks my first wave of MPC beats. I bought the MPC in the summer of 2003, so there is a learning curve and honeymoon phase embedded within, which to me is very sentimental element with regards to my personal recollection of the music of HISS. There were several record stores in DC back then and most are now closed (they started to drop like flies after the arrival of Serato and with the rise of mp3s and filesharing). Digital crates did not exist, social media was in it’s primitive stages and the internet was just becoming accessible to most consumers in a way that was quickly impacting the music industry. Apple wasn’t even a threat to Microsoft back then, if I recall. I was between the ages of 19-21 and my main motivation for producing music was ‘having fun’. The competitor in me (at that time) set out to be equal or better than any of the established producers I looked up to respectively. I used to make beat CD’s and most of these tracks at some point were solicited to friends and artists during my early self promotion days (rest assured some of your favorites / legendary MCs, DJ’s and producers had these tracks on beat tapes that I personally handed out at countless events and chance encounters, as I circulated the east coast). I played these beats live on the streets of DC and some of them even had used been used for songs by MC’s I knew. Side note: I was living in a different basement than the one people are familiar with during most of this time (different from the basement seen in the now infamous MPC POV vids).
