MFSP – High Springs, FL
High Springs is the township surrounding Ginnie Springs, a gorgeous, natural spring in Alachua County, North Central Florida. The Santa Fe River feeds Ginnie and many other springs, supporting some of the richest biodiversity in North America. I’ve named the twelve / fourteen tracks after fish, turtles, birds, snakes and insects that live along the Santa Fe.
Nestle Corp. removes over a million gallons of water from a day from Ginnie Springs to fill plastic bottles while paying almost nothing in taxes and land rights. River height has steadily declined in recent decades, and there is an ongoing fight to block Nestle’s ability to drain the springs. Nestle employs only 800 people in Florida, most of them in their corporate headquarters in Tampa. Nestle has used similarly exploitative practices to steal and profit off the water from local communities all over the world.
The album is dedicated to the life, including the humans, living off the aquifer. May the people of the Floridan recognize their own water when it is sold back to them in plastic bottles by a Swiss multinational.
Florida Springs Council (www.floridaspringscouncil.org) provides information and resources on their website. A donation can go a long way to support their efforts to protect Florida’s water.
